Chapter Seven

Hunters. That meant humans.

“Stay here,” Phoenix said, not so much as glancing at Peter as he flew out of bed. He heard the ripping noises of his clothing as he tore himself out of them. They weren’t totally shredded, but they would be ruined now.

A shame, since they had Peter’s smell on them. Phoenix had planned on keeping them if his mate chose to walk away, back to his normal human life.

“Wait, Phoenix,” Peter called, struggling to get his clothes back on instead of off.

Phoenix yanked open the door, snarling behind himself. “I said stay here! Lock the door!” he added, slamming it shut behind him.

If Peter thought he was going to come out here and follow Phoenix into any danger zone then he had another thing coming.

Phoenix allowed the wild animal inside of him to come out, and it was easy because he smelled blood. The blood of an omega werewolf.

Todd or Colten? Phoenix’s mind was already rushing into a near frenzy, and he was having trouble distinguishing scents.

That was bad. He didn’t want to let the beast inside have too much freedom. If that happened, Phoenix might go to sleep while the wild animal took over to play. It played rough.

Control. He needed to keep control. He didn’t crave that anymore. Phoenix had struggled to maintain his control throughout the years, and he was determined to keep some of it.

Still, he allowed the stupid animal inside of himself to come out, at least a little.

He was going to need it for this. Good thing Peter would be out of the way.

Phoenix charged through the halls, barely seeing the others ahead of him, or coming up beside him.

Zane’s face was longer, darker with fur as he was half in his wolfhound form and getting ready to charge whoever it was that had come onto their property. Hunter was already in his wolfhound form, and his claws dug into the hardwood beneath him as he surged forward.

Phoenix felt himself somewhere in between. His toes formed claws that also scraped into the wood, bringing up chunks of it. His hands were warped shapes of their former selves, his fingers long and his knuckles thick and swollen. His fingernails were a thing of the past as they had also formed themselves into claws, and the creature inside of Phoenix’s head was already salivating over the thought of tearing them into the face of some idiot intruder.

They didn’t bother with the stairs when they got to them. Everyone jumped down to the bottom floor, where the fight was already taking place.

Logan was in his wolfhound shape, snarling and snapping at the heels of a human in black armor, who was doing his best to strike at Logan’s face with what looked like a nightstick. Only it seemed to have blue sparks coming from the other end of it.

Great. It was electrified. Fucking perfect.

Logan might have had an easier time of his attack if his hind leg wasn’t hanging limply behind him, as though it had been broken or wounded somehow.
